Admissions Process of TECH Freire Charter School for Students Entering Fall 2018
In order to attend the TECH Freire Charter School, an applicant and his/her legal guardian must perform the following actions:
1. Complete and submit a TECH Freire “Application for Admission”
For the 2018-2019 School Year, TECH Freire will accept applications for all grades offered at TECH Freire (grades 9-12). Please note, however, that we anticipate most openings to be in grade 9, the main entry point into our school. Some spaces may be available in grades 10-12, but such availability may not be assessed until July 2018, with families not contacted until then (if space even exists).
Applications are valid for the grade level listed only, as availability of spaces is on a grade-specific basis. TECH Freire does not offer an 8th grade program, and availability of spaces in grades other than 9 is expected to be limited. An applicant must therefore successfully complete the grade prior to the grade to which they are applying by July 6th of the year of admission. If a child applies for a grade that they anticipated to be entering in the new school year but, at any time during the application process up to and including the start of the school year, the child is for whatever reason not able to be officially assigned to the applied grade and instead requires another grade (for example fails to complete the current grade or wishes to skip a grade), that child’s application would then move to the bottom of the waitlist for their eligible grade level. Such students will not be automatically enrolled even if offered a space based upon previous grade placement. TECH Freire will consider prior school records in placement decisions but reserves the right to determine a student’s appropriate grade level placement at its discretion.
An individual can obtain an application form online from the TECH Freire website, request one be mailed home, or pick one up from the school in person. TECH Freire also accepts the Charter School Common Application. TECH Freire may also accept online applications (check our website for information). An individual can submit this completed application by mailing it back to the school or dropping it off at the school during regular school hours. We cannot receive faxes. Please note that TECH Freire is not responsible for lost documents and cannot accept any claims for missing material being sent in by the deadline. Please send your material via certified mail if you would like a receipt of its delivery.
The application shall be published in English, Spanish, and Standard Chinese. Translation or interpretation of application is made available in any language requested by parent or guardian whose home language is other than English, Spanish, or Standard Chinese.
The application process only involves submitting the application form by the deadline. No interview, school tour, or information session is required).
Upon receipt of your application, TECH Freire will send you a confirmation letter that will also contain your Application Identification Number (AIN). Please keep this number safe as it will be used during the posting of lottery results on the TECH Freire website.
As required by PA charter school law, TECH Freire Charter School uses a lottery system for admitting its students. Siblings of a currently enrolled TECH Freire student or applicants who live in the Strawberry Mansion Catchment area receive preference in the lottery. In order to be eligible for the sibling preference, the applicant must be related to a current TECH Freire student in one of the following ways: 1.) has a shared legal guardian or there is shared legal custody of both students by a common individual or 2.) is a half sibling, step sibling, or biological sibling. Residing at the same address as a current student alone does not make an applicant eligible for the sibling preference. There will be no sibling preference to those students who apply after the January 26th deadline. In order to be eligible, applicants must indicate the sibling preference on their application. TECH Freire will not retroactively apply sibling preference for anyone who did not request the sibling preference at the time of application prior to the January 26th deadline. TECH Freire reserves the right to determine if a student is eligible for sibling preference. Siblings of currently enrolled students will be placed on a priority list before the lottery. No preference will be shown to siblings who apply after this deadline. Preference will be extended from newly enrolled students to their siblings, provided that all siblings seeking enrollment submitted applications prior to the January 26th deadline and indicated the sibling relationship on the original application. Once the sibling selected in the lottery has submitted complete enrollment paperwork to the school, any of his/her eligible siblings will then be placed at the top of the waitlist (by the lottery order of the not-yet-enrolled sibling if more than one such applicant is on the waitlist at a time).
Please note that only applications containing Philadelphia addresses will be placed into the main lottery. Any application containing a non-Philadelphia address will be placed on a separate non-resident waitlist, the order of which is determined by a separate lottery. Furthermore, proof of residency will be required if your student is selected in the lottery to continue in the enrollment process. Any applicant who cannot provide a Philadelphia address during the proof of residency check will be placed on this separate non-resident waitlist as well. TECH Freire will not draw students from this non-resident waitlist until after the first day of August prior to the start of the new school year, and this list will be drawn from only if spaces are still available in a particular grade level and all Philadelphia resident applicants have been offered a space at TECH Freire.
In the lottery, TECH Freire will publicly draw AINs (through www.random.org) for as many spaces as there are available in each grade (grades 9 to 12). All students selected will be announced and enrollment paperwork will be mailed home.
All remaining students who were NOT selected in the lottery will be placed on the waitlist. Due to the large number of applicants, the results will be posted only on the TECH Freire website by AIN rather than mailed. Please do not call the Admissions Office to find out your place on the list.
Any student who applies after the January 26th deadline will be placed on the waitlist after those students who applied before January 26th on a first-come, first-served basis.
The waitlist is valid for one school year only and is based on current year applications.
We do not require school-wide re-enrollment paperwork for each school year. All students currently enrolled and attending TECH Freire automatically re-enroll for the following school year.
2. Return required documents by deadline if selected in the lottery in order to hold your spot at Freire.
It is important to understand that being selected in a lottery is only STEP ONE of being enrolled at TECH Freire. The next step involves submitting the required documents by the proper deadline or your spot will be forfeited.
If selected in the Lottery, you must submit all documents directly to the school in person (no mail or faxes accepted) by 3:00pm on March 23rd, 2018. Failure to meet this deadline forfeits your spot at TECH Freire. No exceptions will be made. You may re-apply and be assigned a new AIN, giving your family a spot at the end of our waitlist.
The required material to continue the enrollment process is as follows:
- PDE Charter School Enrollment Notification Form
- Proof of Age (for example, Birth Certificate)
- Proof of Residency
- Record of Required Immunizations
- Act 26 Form
- Home Language Survey
Students who submit these six required documents by the March 23rd deadline are considered enrolled for the 2018-2019 school year unless there is a change in the student’s grade level (see statement above).
3. Submit Final Report Card by Friday, July 13th 2018
Once students are enrolled in TECH Freire, we request that each student submit their report card by Friday, July 13th 2018. While submission of this report card is not required for enrollment, it ensures that the student has successfully completed their current grade and enables us to place students in the appropriate classes. Report cards may be mailed or dropped off in person.
