Student Body: TECH Freire serves approximately 500 students in grades 9-12, who come to us from throughout Philadelphia.
Location: TECH Freire is located in a converted former Packard automobile showroom, just across the street from the historic Uptown Theater in the heart of North Philadelphia. We work every day to be a true community school – an integrated and contributing part of our neighborhood. Our location along SEPTA’s subway Broad Street Line allows our students to easily travel to school and allows quick access to our education partners and learning experiences in Center City.
History: Since 1999, the Freire Schools network has offered students a high-quality education, with no testing or GPA requirements. TECH Freire opened in 2016 to bring the proven Freire Schools model to North Philadelphia with a technology-integrated twist.
College Success: TECH Freire reimagines the college prep high school by blending state-of-the-art equipment and hands-on learning with the rigor of the time-tested Freire Schools liberal arts program to help each of our students truly thrive. We have a culture that demands excellence from our students while providing them the supports they need to achieve at high levels and prepare for college. 89% of TECH Freire’s Class of 2025 (88 graduates) were accepted to at least 100 colleges and universities and earned over $9.4 million in college scholarships and aid. Additionally, 59% of our first graduating class (Class of 2019 and latest data available) matriculated to college the following fall. This exceeds the School District of Philadelphia’s college matriculation rate of 54%.
Professional Prep: At the core of the Freire mission is the belief that every student has the power to build the future. That is why TECH Freire is committed to ensuring that all students participate in engaging and meaningful professional prep programming as part of their educational experience. Freire Forward is a network-wide experiential learning initiative that helps students connect classroom learning to hands-on experiences and begin to establish a vision and framework for their future. Through classroom lessons, dual enrollment courses, career days, job exposure field trips, and now our Freire Experienceship Program, our students cultivate work readiness skills while forming valuable connections with a deep and diverse network of businesses and professionals.
Honors: In 2025, TECH Freire was recognized by Philadelphia Magazine as a top public high school in Philly, standing out among 46 District and 29 charter schools.
