Student Body: TECH Freire serves approximately 500 students in grades 9-12, who come to us from throughout Philadelphia.
Location: TECH Freire is located in a converted former Packard automobile showroom, just across the street from the historic Uptown Theater in the heart of North Philadelphia. We work every day to be a true community school – an integrated and contributing part of our neighborhood. Our location along SEPTA’s subway Broad Street Line allows our students to easily travel to school and allows quick access to our education partners and learning experiences in Center City.
History: Since 1999, the Freire Schools network has offered students a high-quality education, with no testing or GPA requirements. TECH Freire opened in 2016 to bring the proven Freire Schools model to North Philadelphia with a technology-integrated twist.
College Success: TECH Freire reimagines the college prep high school by blending state-of-the-art equipment and hands-on learning with the rigor of the time-tested Freire Schools liberal arts program to help each of our students truly thrive. We have a culture that demands excellence from our students while providing them the supports they need to achieve at high levels and prepare for college. 96% of TECH Freire’s Class of 2024 (76 graduates) were accepted to at least 103 colleges and universities and earned over $7.6 million in college scholarships and aid. Additionally, 59% of our first graduating class (Class of 2019 and latest data available) matriculated to college the following fall. This exceeds the School District of Philadelphia’s college matriculation rate of 54%.
1:1 Computing: All TECH Freire students receive an individual laptop for use in school and at home. Our 1:1 program ensures continuity of education during these uncertain times and is helping us revolutionize teaching and learning now that we are learning in person in our building.
Diverse Staff: As 99% of our students are people of color, TECH Freire has prioritized recruiting and developing a racially diverse staff. With 45% staff of color, our students are certain to have opportunities to work with staff who look like them, both in and out of the classroom. This is just one of the many steps we have taken to show that Action = Equity at TECH Freire.
